What is a Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massages are effective for many chronic pain conditions and can relieve musculoskeletal disorders, recover from sports injuries, or enhance flexibility and performance.

The whole point of this treatment is to break up muscle tension, adhesions and scar tissue, which often lie in deeper musculature, so your therapist will likely be applying a good deal of pressure. However, you should let them know if this becomes too uncomfortable.

How does a Deep Tissue Massage help?

Your therapist’s extra pressure stimulates deep layers of the muscle’s tissue, fascia, and tendons. These techniques ease the knots in your muscles that, if not treated, can interfere with circulation, resulting in severe pain and inflammation and limiting your range of motion. The treatment can also break up scar tissue and adhesions.

Deep tissue massage is especially effective on stiff necks, upper back pain, shoulder pain, lower back pain, and tight leg muscles.

What is involved in a Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massage can sound intimidating, especially if you don’t know what is involved. After a comprehensive consultation, your therapist will determine how to treat your condition best. They will start by warming up the muscles using light pressure on the areas they will work on. They will then use various techniques where you will feel a gliding pressure along the fibres of your muscles. Pressure can be applied perpendicularly to muscle fibres to release adhesions causing discomfort.
